June 15, 2016(Nyamilepedia) —– South Sudan’s First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar Teny, who commands one of the largest faction of the national army, SPLA, has promoted a war veteran to rank of Brigadier General.

The renowned musician, Michael Pal Riek, who is known for his song “not confirm” is a trained SPLA soldier.

Pal fought in the earlier wars of liberation against Khartoum regimes under the leadership of SPLM/SPLA founder, Dr. John Garang de Mabior, but was quickly forgotten by his colleagues after he lost his vision.

Pal is known to have fought in Nasir and Jokow where he lost his sight to a severe gunshot that destroyed his retina in 1980s, however, due to lack of a proper system, Pal like most of his colleagues, was let down and left to suffer by SPLA under Salva Kiir Mayardit.

The elderly veteran could not claim his ranks or his pension after South Sudan independent as the SPLA/M system became highly corrupt and uneven.

Although recognized by those he fought alongside with, Pal Riek’s name in the SPLA “damn records” never got confirmed or recognized by Salva Kiir leadership which forced him to compose a song that tells his war stories.

After SPLM/SPLA break into two factions in 2013, Pal fled the conflict into SPLA-IO liberated areas where he continued to compose war songs that praises SPLA-IO for fighting against Ugandan and Sudanese mercenaries alongside Salva Kiir’s loyalists.

On June 14, 2016, Michael Pal Riek was promoted by Dr. Riek Machar Teny to rank of Brigadier General.

In his recognition speech yesterday, Gen. Pal calls on South Sudanese to follow Machar’s leadership if they want their rights recognized.

“If you want your right to be recognized and appreciated, you must follow Dr Riek Machar because he is the only leader who always give and rewards each an everyone his or her deserved rights regardless”. Said Gen. Pal Riek.
