BY JIENG COUNCIL OF ELDERS (JCE)
THE REPUBLIC OF SOUTH SUDAN

For immediate release
June 2, 2016(Nyamilepedia) —— In continuation of its campaign of disinformation against the Republic of South Sudan, Sudantribune wrote in its Monday 30th of May 2016 website edition that it has had an interview with Justice Ambrose Riny Thiik, Chairman of the Jieng Council of Elders (JCE) in Wau. In the story, Sudantribune.com attributed the following statements to the JCE Chairman:
“The council welcomes and thanks the president on the appointment of the advisers. It was one of our [JCE] proposals to ensure nobody is left out,”
“We proposed the creation of the post of presidential assistant and Daniel Awet Akot was one of the people we proposed to be appointed as a presidential assistant,” “But it is okay he is appointed if this is how the president sees it.”………………
“The appointment of the advisers falls within the prerogative of the president and it should not be a big deal. They will be advising him in his capacity as the president and so it is him to decide who to appoint as his advisor. It cannot be a general issue,”……………

The JCE categorically denies any knowledge of these statements and the entire contents of the fabricated interview. Sudantribune.com did not interview the Chairman of the JCE neither in person nor by phone and so these statements were concocted as part of a systematic campaign both to smear the good name of the President and the JCE. In light of the aforementioned, it is important for the public to know that the statements attributed to the JCE and its leadership, were deliberately made-up by Sudantribune.com to further a goal that is only known to its management and its journalists.
The JCE would like to make it unequivocally clear to the people of South Sudan and the world that as a civil society body, the JCE can only publicly advocate for policies that are meant to steer the country towards the path of stability and development, and that the Council does not enjoy any special status of advising or influencing the decisions made by the President of the Republic. The widely circulated rumors that the JCE runs the country are so far removed from any truth and they are designed to paint a picture of a dysfunctional government and weak leadership all to try to advance the regime change agenda.
To insinuate that the President of the Republic takes instructions from the JCE on how to make important administrative and political decisions, insults the intelligence of the President and that of the whole nation of South Sudan. This of course is a continuation of the malicious intentions of those who are working hard to undermine the authority of the President and to drive the country towards anarchy. The President has been making decisions long before JCE was formed, and will continue to make decisions in his constitutional power independently. President Salva Kiir Mayardit does not take and does not need any special instructions from JCE on how to make decisions. His wisdom suffices; it has always been.
In closing, the JCE would like to warn Sudantribune.com and those feeding it with fabricated information, to cease forthwith this campaign of disinformation against the people of South Sudan and their leaders. These negative campaigns are not in the interest of the unity and peace amongst our people. The JCE calls upon the Association of Media Development in South Sudan (AMDISS) and the Union of Journalists of South Sudan (UJOSS) to urge Sudan Tribune and its journalists, if Sudan Tribune is their member, to adhere to high professional code of ethics and report truthful information.
The JCE would like to reassure the concerned public that the Council and its Chairman will publish only written and signed documents. Therefore, any other stories purported to have come from the JCE that do not bear signatures of JCE leadership, are not authentic and should be discarded as false. The JCE would like to reiterate its commitment to the Peace Agreement and calls upon the parties to the agreement to remain ceased and focused on returning the country to normalcy. This is the highest priority at this critical moment.
