April 26, 2016(Nyamilepedia) —– The South Sudan Human Rights Society for Advocacy(SSHURSA) welcomes the arrival in Juba of Dr Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon; the chairman and Commander-in-Chief of the Sudan Peoples’ Liberation Movement or Army-In Opposition (SPLM/A-IO) and First Vice President designate. His arrival shows good will in the side of the SPLM/A-IO and cooperation of President Kiir’s government as that signals one of the major milestones in the implementation of the Agreement on the Resolution of Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan(the Agreement). SSHURSA calls on parties without any further delay, to form the Transitional Government of National Unity and fully implement the Agreement.

SSHURSA further urges the parties to prioritise security of the people all over South Sudan, release all prisoners of war and other political detainees due to war, amicably hold a dialogue on the number of states which should constitute the territory of the Republic of South Sudan and with urgency, harmonise ethnic boundaries, embark on constitutional amendment process, offer dignified settlement of the internally displaced persons and refugees and carry out reforms in most non-rule of law abiding institutions of the state which include security, police, Judiciary and others as provided for in the Agreement. SSHURSA also calls upon Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission(JMEC) and other regional and international bodies to keep close watch over the implementation of the Agreement.

South Sudan has suffered a brutal civil war over the last two and half years. This resulted in continued abuses of human rights, rule of law, total breakdown of social fabrics and major setbacks in its quest for nationhood. The full implementation of the Agreement will restore hope, dignity and humanity in the South Sudanese people whose lives have been shattered apart by the violence and bitterness. SSHURSA urges both Machar and Kiir to bury any personal prejudices, prevail over some of their generals who may be against the Agreement. The two leaders should put South Sudan above their personal ambitions for power. Instead, they must build trust and show sense of commitment to work together to lead South Sudan to a new path of hope, peace, reconciliation, justice and national healing. This; will build confidence for the smooth implementation of the Agreement. END

SSHURSA is non-political and non-profit -making national human rights organisation founded on 5 June 2007, by South Sudanese lawyers and Law Students at Law Development Centre (LDC), Makerere, Kampala, Uganda.
