A media report quoted the Chairperson of the Puntland State Court Mohamud Abdi Mohamed to have said that their court proceedings followed through different stages before the execution of the convicts.

“Puntland State Court of Armed Forces executed 18 al-Shabaab militants this morning. These convicts were all behind the killings of many of our important people here. The court took the right action against them,” Mohamed said.

Unwelcomed move

The news was not welcomed in the camp of al-Shabaab, the terrorist organization that termed the execution as a “massacre of innocent civilians by the Puntland state”.

The militant group has carried out a series of assassinations and bombings in Galkayo and other parts of the Mudug region, and Puntland officials have vowed to bring to justice any member of the terrorist group or those who engage in terrorist activities according to Xinhua.

Al-Shabaab, also known as Harakat al-Shabaab, al-Mujahideen, is a terrorist, jihadist fundamentalist group based in East Africa and Yemen with a strong presence in Somalia and Kenya.

In 2009 Ahmed Abdi Godane, the leader of Al Shabaab imposed a ban on the UN World Food Programme and other Western Agencies in Somalia.
