June 17, 2015(Nyamilepedia) — Speaking to Eyewitness News in Johanesburg, South Africa, the former South Sudanese Vice President Riek Machar calls on his main rival, Salva Kiir Mayardit, to resign  by July 9th, 2015.

As Salva Kiir’s term in office comes to an end in three weeks, the chairman of the armed Opposition, Dr. Riek Machar Teny, calls on Salva Kiir to resign to allow the people of South Sudan to exercise their rights through democratic means to elect their leaders.

“His term comes to end by the 9th, [actually the midnight of 8th] of July, 2015. His time is up. He won’t be any more an elected president. He cannot be described like that. He is not any more a constitutional president, his term is up.” Dr. Machar tells the South African media.

“He has deprived the people of South Sudan to exercise their will in elections. What he should do now, so that peace comes, is to resign by midnight, the July 8th, 2015” Machar continued.

According to Dr. Machar, a caretaker government would be formed to bring peace and prepare the nation for new elections.

“And then a caretaker government is formed, which will bring about peace, will prepare for elections; Caretaker governments are always short. There is no need of having a transitional government” Dr. Machar explains.

In Addis ababa, Ethiopia,  a senior cadre of the opposition, Prof. Adwok Nyaba, reiterates a similar call for Salva Kiir to step down by July 9th, 2015.

“On July 9th, we are going to have a constitutional vacuum due to the expiring of the term of office of president Kiir. So it is going to create a constitutional vacuum.” Professor Adwok said.

“So we are suggesting that he must resign to give room to the formation of a caretaker government that will now prepare the country for new elections and of course new government” Adwok continued.

Dr. Adwok, and other senior politicians of SPLM/SPLA[IO] led by the chief negotiator for the opposition, Gen. Taban Deng Gai, just returned from the IGAD-Peace Consultations last week.

In addition to calling for Salva Kiir’s resignation, the Opposition presented  to IGAD their positions, which include the demand for a new constitution, federalism, accountability, amalgamation of armies and reparation.

“We also embark on the building of a new constitution and the implementation of the federal system.”Adwok said.

“Federalism must now be implemented because it is a popular demand by the people of South Sudan”he continued.

Although the regional bloc did not heed to some of the proposals by the two warring parties, the opposition demands compensations and reparations for the areas that have been destroyed by the war.

Adwork reiterates that all the foreign fighters, currently fighting on the side of Salva Kiir, will also leave the country when a peace agreement is signed.

“Once the agreement is signed, there is a cease fire, then the foreign forces will have to leave. Of course the agreement leaves the two armies in their positions until after 18 months when they start the amalgamation or the merger of the two armies” Dr. Adwok said.
