Gen. Gathoth Gatkuoth Visits Wounded Soldiers in Maiwut, Assures Accountability!
May 11, 2015(Nyamilepedia) — The Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistic for SPLM/SPLA in Opposition, Maj. Gen. Gathoth Gatkuoth Hothnyang, a member of military command council, visits the wounded soldiers at Maiwut County Hospital in Upper Nile (Adar) state earlier this month.
According to the office of the deputy chief of staff, Gen. Gathoth pleaded with the wounded heroes, and congratulates them for the victories against the government troops.
“Dear Comrades wounded heroes, it’s my pleasure to stand before you and congratulates you for the victories you have been making since 15 December 2013 up to today 1 May 2015 against the brutal enemy Salva Kiir militia forces.”Gen. Gathoth said.
According to the reliable source, General Gathoth explained the genesis of South Sudan conflict, which he attributes to President Salva Kiir’s failures to run the country, and the subsequent killing of citizens along tribal lines.
“My comrades wounded heroes, there are many quite reasons why we are fighting Salva Kiir regime: first, he has failed to rule the Country, implement Democratic system, respect Country Constitution, provide security to the people of South Sudan, stolen Country public funds, delivery development services and committed terrible atrocities and human right violation.” said the Deputy Chief of Staff for logistic.
Mr. Gatkuoth further reminded the soldiers of how desperate the country needs peace, however, he vows that any peace that does not address the root causes of the conflict is a no peace.
The general tells the wounded heroes that any peace that keeps Salva Kiir in power yet fails to address the root causes of the civil war is a “bad peace”, and therefore they will continue to fight until a good peace is achieved.
“My comrades wounded heroes; we actually want peace and respect the international community peace Negotiators who have dedicated their precious time for peace to come to South Sudan but that peace should address the root causes of the conflict and that peace should come without Salva Kiir otherwise, signing a bad peace is better to continue the war until we achieve our objective through barrel of our guns,” Gatkuoth said.
“We vow to continue fighting Salva Kiir until he is completely out of power that he has misuse against our Nation.” he continued
Gen. Gatkuoth, who served as a County Commissioner under President Salva Kiir, defected the government at the onset of the conflict, and fought fiercely in Upper Nile, capturing the capital, Malakal, several times.
General Gatkouth believes that Salva Kiir has lost legitimacy to be recognized as a national leader but a “tribal president” who has massacred thousands of Nuer ethnic group.
He strongly assures the soldiers that Salva Kiir must face justice and accountability before signing of any peace agreement.
“Tribal President Salva Kiir has intentionally massacred your parents in Juba December-2013, therefore, I assure you that there is no any way around Salva Kiir must go and face justice and accountability before signing a peace agreement.” He said.
“Hence, I shall once again inform you that we will never ever forget you and Salva Kiir must answer to all the tragedies and crimes he has committed. However, we will always be at your side and may our lovely God bless all abundantly.” he added.
Gatkuoth, among other generals in opposition, calls on the international community to support the hybrid court or work around the International Criminal Court (ICC) doctrines to bring perpetrators of South Sudan conflict including Salva Kiir to account.
The Opposition leadership, under the Country’s former Vice President, endorses the Hybrid Court proposal, and calls on the African Union to publicly avail their findings on South Sudan conflict.
On hearing of Hybrid Court and the shifting of US government’s position on the conflict, South Sudan government has rejected the idea, and instead calls on the international community to support the young nation to reach peace agreement, first, before demanding any accountability.
Salva Kiir’s government also calls on the AU to store their report on South Sudan conflict until further notice, claiming that the report was written by members of Sudan government.
The deputy chief of staff for logistic, Gen. Gatkuoth, concluded the visit by thanking the ICRC for providing medical services to the people of Maiwut County and other rebel held territories.
“On top of that Lastly but not the least, I would also like to give many thanks to ICRC for the wonderful medical services they are offering to you in Maiwut County Hospital.” Gatkuoth said.
