Ruweng County in Turmoil as Deputy Governor Imposes Iron Fist Rule

Jan 14, 2015(Nyamilepedia) — South Sudan’s Ruweng County in Western Upper Nile is on the brink of a ferocious internal rift as the current State Deputy Governor, Miabek Lang Mading, unilaterally declares local elections in which he is doubly running as the County’s SPLM Chairman and Secretary.

Miabek Lang has moved to strike and jail members of the County Liberation Council who are opposed to unauthorized elections, viewing such elections as illegal. Those who have refused to follow the orders have been thrown to jail. Some Council Members have given in to his demand while others have allegedly resigned.

Miabek Lang has also moved to sack all elected chiefs and replaced them with those who either lost during the last elections or his allies whom he has single handedly appointed so that those appointees can endorse his double candidacy without opposition. This is why Chol Deng Miaker from Nyiel Payam of Panriang Constituency who beat Miading Mayiik in the last election has been unilaterally removed and replaced with his former opponent himself, Making Miading Mayiik , as the Head Chief of Parieng Town Constituency. The same scenario is reportedly taking place across the County in different Payams, Panyang (Jau), Aliiny, and Yida among others.

Meanwhile, police authorities are reportedly on a crackdown rampage, arresting every one viewed as opposed to Miabek’s candidacy.Former SPLM County Secretary, Luka Them Michar, who is Miabek’s ardent opponent is said to have been warned not to travel to Panriang Town or face arrest.

A meeting during which Miabek Lang will be endorsed without contest has been organized to take place on Monday, January 12, 2015.

Miabek Lang, an unpopular figure to the people of Panriang owing to his stay in power for too long and his iron first rule, had been the County Commissioner since 1994 and continued as Commissioner from 2005 until he was removed in 2011 by Former Governor Taban Deng Gai. He returned a few months later as Deputy Governor to Joseph Monytuil at the state level but has continued to wield nearly unchallenged power as potential challengers choose low profile to avoid the risk of violence as happened between in 2000 during which several military members were unjust killed in cold blood.

Miabek Lang’s political role has highly polarized the community. He is not only the high ranking family member in the Government. The Deputy Minister of Roads and Bridges, Majok Mijak, is Miabek’s cousin, so is the Pariang Military Commander, Brig. Gen. Deng Mayiik as is the the case with Pariang County Commissioner as well as the County Police Commissioner, the Pariang Head Chief, among others.

Observers suggest that this move might prove to be the turning point in the Panriang Local Politics.

The SPLM ideology must stop this’s the time when citizens have the very right to elects into party the people they want and not people who want to be elected by force

Dear Cousins:

Dinka Cousins are really funny. What kind of election are you talking about in the county level. While there is no such as thing call election in state level and there is no presidential election either. Meanwhile Dinka are against anyone who want to run against Kiir in the presidential election and they want to have election in the county level.

My cousins, you are totally confused people and mentally distorted.
You think Salva Kiir dictatorial regime will affect only Nuer? Let the commissioner do what he want to do as the president does whatever he wants to do. If you want fair election, then you need to change president kiir regime first otherwise do not make noise about election.
