Jan 10, 2015(Nyamilepedia) — Latest reports from South Sudan’s capital, Juba, allege that a group of more than 100 army officers have defected the Salva Kiir’s led SPLA-Juba faction yesterday, 9th January, 2015.
“A group of over 100 junior officers from Sudan People Liberation Army (SPLA) General Headquarters in Juba led by a Major rebelled yesterday, 9/1/2015” said the reliable insider, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The insider reiterates that the defectors, led by a major, have overran Meridi army Garrison in Western Equatoria, where they collected guns and ammunitions.
“… they attacked Meridi army garrison in Western Equatoria. The group overran the barracks leaving behind an estimated number of 20 soldiers dead and unknown number of wounded. The group collected guns and ammunitions.” the source alleges.
According to the leader of the group, “their motive is to launch a new revolutionary movement that is aimed at salvaging South Sudan from total collapse and disintegration because of the poor governance and failed leadership in the country”, he reiterates.
According to the insider, “the group strongly believes that the current crisis in South Sudan should be brought to speedy end but this can only be done when the tribal and dictatorial regime in Juba is removed from power.”
“However, it is rather unfortunate that the current protagonists in South Sudan conflict will in no way possible bring peace, reconcile and restore genuine peace in the country.” Said the insider.
The new defectors believe that IGAD will not restore normalcy in the country as the Bloc focuses on non-fundamental issues.
“The IGAD lead peace process is mainly focused on power sharing and reunification of the SPLM factions instead of tackling the fundamental issues that has brought war in the country.” the insider claims.
“It is therefore imperative that patriotic South Sudanese should stand up to bring permanent peace and restore dignity and unity of the people.” he added.
South Sudan’s Greater Equatoria region have witnessed minor defections in the past. The latest defection is believed to have been inspired by Maj.Gen. Martin Terento Konyi, who was recently appointed to double as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Training and the Commander of Eastern Equatoria State for SPLM/SPLA [in Opposition].
The new defection emerged barely a day after the Governor of Central Equatoria, Clement Wani Konga, warned the sons and daughters of Equatoria to stay out of “Dinka-Nuer conflict”
Two days ago Governor Konga warns the Equatoria that “you have known that the two big tribes there are fighting among themselves and hatred have developed and it is difficult to attain peace.”
The CES governor strongly urged the people of Greater Equatoria to come together to help end the conflict through peaceful resolutions, saying:
“It is the only chance that for the people of Equatoria coming together so as to bring an end to this war between Dinka and Nuer.” He said.
“Who you are going to fight, are you going to fight with Dinka or Riek Machar? Equatorians should remain neutral so as to be able to bring peace. Equatorian should stand for peace,” Konga said.
Attempts to reach the two factional military spokesmen, on both sides of the conflict, have failed.
In other reports, fighting has resumed in violation of Ceasefire Agreement in Upper Nile State’s Maban and Nasir county, which reportedly threatens South Sudan’s oilfields in Northern Upper Nile.
