Breaking News: Mass Arrests in Baar Military Barrack Amidst Defection To SPLM/A IO
Jan 8, 2015(Nyamilepedia) — Latest reports from South Sudan’s oil-rich Unity State’s capital confirms that the SPLM/SPLA-Juba faction has launched a major crackdown on Nuer’s Leek sub-clan loyalists linked to the latest defection of their sons to SPLM/SPLA-IO in Unity State.
According to sources, verified by Nyamilpedia’s correspondents in Rubkona and Bentiu, government security forces are arresting Nuer politicians and militants, who are linked to the latest defection to rebels in the state.
“Security forces loyal to SPLA-Juba in Bentiu have kicked off a mass arrests across unity state against their Leek loyalist after Rubkona sons defected with a tank to SPLA/IO on 5th January.” a reliable source confirmed to Nyamilepedia.
The tank’s driver, who is identified as Wadar Bol Yoach Tut, from Rubkona County’s Ngop Payam defected the convoy and joined the SPLM/SPLA [in Opposition] on January 5, 2015 near Kilo 30 while on a government mission to recapture the Unity State’s oil fields from the opposition.
The defection is believed to have heightened suspicion among the Nuer and the Dinka loyalists, which led to their defeats while attempting to capture more territories in Unity State.
According to Brig.Gen. Lul Ruai Koang of SPLM/SPLA [in Opposition], the SPLA-Juba forces were defeated at various fronts in Guit and Rubkona county.
“All The Attackers on our 8 Defensive Positions in Rupkoni and Guit Counties in Unity State had been repulsed to Bentiu town. Details of enemies killed, or captured, weaponry and equipment captured or destroyed will be published once received from Front acommanders”
Lul believes that the allied loyal forces of Salva Kiir’s SPLA faction “…wanted to recapture oil fields from our forces,” however, the SPLA-IO forces pushed them back.
“They attacked our positions in Pan-Akwach and we drove then back” Lul said.
According to Col. Philip Aguer, the army spokesman for SPLA-Juba faction, the rebels shielded the SPLA’s position, however, Aguer provided no details on the current arrests of Leek’s politicians and soldiers.
Reliable sources confirms that the defector, Wdar Bol Yoach Tut et al, was assigned to drive a government minister in the state, after which he was transferred to tank unit guarding the acting Governor of Unity State, Dr. Joseph Nguen Mwenytuel.
On Jan 5th, Wadar and others in a convoy of 10 armored vehicles were tasked to capture the oil fields, however, he decided to defect and run to Luony Luony, an area controlled by the SPLA-IO forces, 2kms away from Bentiu town.
According to the residents, Bol Yoach was received by the commanding commander for SPLA in Opposition in the area.
“Upon his arrival, Bol Yoach was warmly received and welcomed by the field commanders Makal Kuol and Kerdol Thong.”
Security sources within Baar Military base in Rubkona have reported a mass crackdown on Leek loyalists. The source alleged that Appolo Mayang was scheduled to arrive on Tuesday, however, due to fear of arrest, Apollo rescheduled his departure from Juba to Bentiu.
The source further reiterates that Mayang may be arrested upon arrival.
