Sept 09, 2014(Nyamilepedia) — A quick search into South Sudan government’s database reveals that Dr. Jok Madut Jok, who served as Undersecretary in South Sudan’s Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, remains an active payee on the government payroll.
“Jok Madut Jok the Undersecretary in the Ministry of culture he claimed for a long time to have left the government but is very unfortunately that his name still in the payroll of the Ministry of culture up to date he has received his salary up to July 2014”
The reports reveal that Dr. Jok received his salary up to July 2014. According to the investigator, the Undersecretary receives SSP 4,700 a month and his expected to receive the same amount for the month of August in two weeks.
Jok was appointed into Ministry of Culture in 2010, as Undersecretary, during his one year leave from Loyola Marymount University, where he teaches history. Although Jok did not return to Marymount after one year as expected, Jok has detached himself with the position, although he still receives the salaries.
Jok has returned the government vehicle and moved back to United State, however, the source reveals that Dr. Jok has been receiving double pay as undersecretary and executive director of Sudd Institute while teaching abroad.
“He was all this time the executive director of Sudd Institute receiving double salary, but later when he moved back to US he become the chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Sudd Institute” the report reads.
Jok was implicated by the national security in Wau in 2012, beaten, tortured and accused of being a “traitor from Khartoum,” in his home town. At the time, Jok couldn’t imagine the future of such an army and what the fate of the nation would be in a few years.
“If a peoples’ army, one of the strongest pillars of a nation can treat citizens, the very reason for its existence, in this manner, where is the future of such an army and what is the fate of the nation? If this sort of thing happens to a senior government official, what should we imagine happens to ordinary citizens, people who do not even have identity cards to quickly show who they are?” Jok wondered.
Although he continued to receive his salary Jok has been on and off, criticizing the government for lack of progress and development. In some of his earlier articles Jok described the country as an animal on crooked legs, which he believed three of the four legs were broken before 2013 and unless something was done to fix it, the country was going to have a very very difficult future.
However, this year Jok’s perspectives changed. The difficult future that came in December, to Jok, was a coup, although he has no tangible evidence. Jok has continued to represent the government abroad and maintains his position despite other politicians were dismissed for fleeing the country following the 2013 crises.
Critics believe that Jok has downplayed a lot of truth in the international media before of the position he holds in the government.
“others from other ethnicity are being dismissed because they run for their dear lives from Juba massacre, but Dr. Jok who come from Warrap continued to enjoy and received his salary through an agent while is not in office. Jok isn’t relieved from office by Dictator Salva Kiir, many wonder why Jok is very supportive to Kiir regime? and very dishonest to the international community” Said Taban Benjamin, a South Sudanese academician in Kampala, Uganda.
