August 28, 2015 (Nyamilepedia) – The AU has welcomed the signing of the IGAD Compromise Peace Agreement by President Salva Kiir, calling on all the parties to the conflict to seize the current opportunity and implement the agreement fully without any reservations.

The African Union says the agreement is the best hope for restoring peace and stability to the war ravaged young nation, so they expect all parties to comply with the agreement terms and implement it in full.

Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Chairperson of the AU Commission, said in a statement issued from the AU’s Headquarters that all the parties in South Sudan must “seize this unique opportunity to open a new chapter in the history of their young nation and live up to the expectations of their long suffering people.”

The AU chairperson reiterated AU determination to support South Sudan through the implementation of the compromise deal which it says was reach after intensive and prolonged negotiations and consultations.

The agreement calls for formation of a Transitional government based on power-sharing between all the different South Sudanese warring parties, for a permanent Ceasefire, redeployment of troops outside the capital Juba and other towns and reinstatement of the  opposition leader as First Vice President, while Salva Kiir remains the President of the Republic.

South Sudan the world’s youngest nation has been ravaged by a 20 month civil war that has left the country in ruins with more than 50 thousand people killed, more than 2 million displaced and thousands more fleeing as refugees to neighbouring countries.
